Newsletter from AAUP LA State Conference, Feb 17, 2017 Dr. Howard Bunsis (Eastern Michigan) from the national AAUP visited our campuses in Baton Rouge, Alexandria, and Lafayette Feb 9-11. In presenting the bleak prospects we face in the State and the nation, he had a wealth of information to share. A brief summary is given here. The full set of his Powerpoint slides may be found through the LSU Faculty Senate website: http://www.lsu.edu/senate/media%20archive.html. He exhorted us to grow our chapters of AAUP, that body standing ready to help us as it has for a hundred years. Revenues and State support of higher education All but 7 US states showed gains in the total higher education appropriation between 2012 and 2017, but LA’s loss was the second worst at -11%. Already, the 2012 number was 30% below 2009. The change per capita was +7% for the national average, LA’s -25% being the second from the bottom. For the year 2016-7, while most showed an increase, LA is one of three with a further drop of over 5%. State support as percent of total revenues are 38, 24, 20 for the years 2008, 2012, and 2016, respectively. Concomitantly, tuition, again as percent,…
AAUP LA State Conference Annual Meeting Room 1834, Lavin-Bernick Center, Tulane Univ Saturday, Apr 30, 2016 President’s Report Since our last annual meeting held in LSU-Alexandria on May 2, 2015, the Executive Committee had its semi-annual meeting at Southern University, Baton Rouge, on Nov 7. Commissioner of Higher Education James Rallo spoke about the issues facing our universities. We lost recently a good friend and national AAUP a long serving officer and staunch defender of academic freedom and faculty rights, Dr. Jordan Kurland. His support and wise counsel will be much missed. A current list of AAUP members of our state will soon be available, the last one of May 2015 showing 167 members. Once again, all campuses are encouraged to have active chapters, it taking only 7 to establish one. Each chapter is also encouraged to maintain a website and link to the State Conference’s. Participation in activities at the national level is also useful and important. The following opportunities are worthy of note. Travel support is possible for the Summer Institutes. A forthcoming webinar on teaching evaluation will discuss trends and areas of concern in teaching evaluation, drawn from a survey of over nine thousand faculty. It will…
